Legal Aptitude Assessment (LAA)

Competency-Based Legal Admissions Prototype

A proposed framework for evaluating legal aptitude through legal reasoning tasks rather than general abstract reasoning alone.

Research Prototype — S.D. Lawrence

The Legal Aptitude Assessment (LAA) is an independent educational and research prototype developed to explore whether legal aptitude may be distinguishable from general analytical aptitude.

The LAA was created in response to a simple question:

Can readiness for legal education be evaluated through legal reasoning tasks rather than solely through general analytical reasoning assessments?

The assessment does not require prior legal education. All rules necessary to answer questions are provided within the assessment.

The LAA evaluates five competency areas:

The purpose of the project is not to replace existing admissions assessments. Rather, it is intended to contribute to discussions surrounding legal education, admissions reform, and legal aptitude measurement.

The LAA is part of the L³ Legal Literacy Ecosystem and is powered by spAIcebook.com.
